I am pleased to announce the reappointment of five members to the Australian Heritage Council, with the Hon Dr David Kemp AC to continue as chair for a second term.

The Australian Heritage Council is the principal adviser to the Australian Government on heritage matters, assessing nominations for the National Heritage List and Commonwealth Heritage List. Members of the Council are appointed for their substantial expertise in natural, historic and Indigenous heritage.

The five members reappointed are: the Hon Dr Kemp AC (chair), Dr Jane Harrington (historic heritage), Associate Professor Don Garden OAM (historic heritage), Dr Lyndon Ormond-Parker (Indigenous heritage) and Ms Rachel Perkins (Indigenous heritage). They join current members Dr Steve Morton (natural heritage) and Dr Jennie Whinam (natural heritage) on the seven-seat Council.

In recent years, the Council has been instrumental in new listings, including Melbourne’s Domain Parkland and Memorial Precinct, the Snowy Mountains Scheme and the Burke, Wills, King and Yandruwandha National Heritage Place.

It has driven the rollout of the Australian Heritage Strategy, prioritised work on Indigenous cultural values and shared our nation’s story with all Australians. It has been a productive and powerful force for heritage conservation in this country.

I thank the Australian Heritage Council for its authoritative and independent advice and look forward to continuing our work together to identify, protect and conserve our most important heritage sites.
