The Turnbull Government today passed measures through the Senate to further strengthen the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and ensure it is best-placed to meet the challenges facing the Reef.

The Government introduced a bill to amend the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975, following the acceptance of all 24 recommendations arising from an independent review of the Marine Park Authority’s governance arrangements conducted last year.

“As the lead agency responsible for the management of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, the Authority’s effective operation is central to the Turnbull Government’s commitment to protecting the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef now and for future generations,” Minister Frydenberg said.

“This legislative reform ensures the Authority is best-placed to continue its important work with reef users, businesses, researchers and government and non government partners.”

A key part of the response is to create a separate Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer for the Authority. The board will also be supplemented with one additional part-time member and a broader range of skills and expertise.

“Our response to this Review builds on our strong record of support for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority,” Minister Frydenberg said.

“As part of our $2 billion Reef 2050 Plan, the Prime Minister recently announced a $60 million investment to boost world-first research to secure the viability of the Great Barrier Reef and the 64,000 jobs that rely on its prosperity.”

Following its passage through the Senate, the bill goes to House of Representatives for its consideration.
