I will travel to the United Kingdom and Germany from 10 to 17 November 2017 to convey recent developments in domestic energy policy and to lead Australia’s delegation to the 23rd Conference of the Parties (COP23) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Under the Paris Agreement, Australia has committed to an ambitious but responsible target of reducing emissions by 26 to 28 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030. This will see Australia halve its emissions per capita and build on our strong track record on meeting our international emissions reduction targets.

At COP23, we will continue to develop the rules that will assist countries to implement the Paris Agreement from 2020.

We welcome and strongly support Fiji’s Presidency of COP23 – the first time ever a Pacific country has had this role providing an opportunity to advance action to address the challenges of climate change with a particular focus on small islands and the Pacific region.

Australia has a long and proud history of working with Pacific countries to build climate resilience and reduce the impact of climate-related disasters. We are delivering on our $1 billion climate finance commitment which includes a $300 million climate change package for the Pacific.

At the COP, I will deliver Australia’s address at the High-Level segment, chair strategy meetings of the Umbrella Group and participate in a number of events that showcase Australia’s international leadership, including the Asia-Pacific Rainforest Partnership and on Blue Carbon.

I will also hold bilateral meetings with my Ministerial counterparts to deepen Australia’s collaboration with other countries on reducing global emissions and building climate resilience.

Australia’s participation at COP23 will highlight our efforts to lower emissions while ensuring reliable and affordable energy. We will showcase our leadership in the global phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and our support for the development and deployment of lower emissions technologies.

Prior to COP23, I will travel to the United Kingdom to meet with government and industry counterparts on energy and environment issues, including delivering a speech on the future of Australia’s energy market to the Australia-UK Chamber of Commerce. This visit provides an opportunity to convey recent developments in Australia’s energy policy and to showcase to key energy businesses in the UK how the Turnbull Government plans to deliver a more affordable and reliable energy system through the National Energy Guarantee.
