Josh Frydenberg today visited the Kew Neighbourhood Learning Centre for a morning tea with staff, committee members and local residents to celebrate National Mental Health Week.

Mr Frydenberg said that he was delighted to attend the morning tea at the Kew Neighbourhood Learning Centre, a community managed organisation that provides invaluable educational, recreational, social support and community development activities for over 900 people each week.  The centre also has an outdoor area featuring chooks, a kitchen garden and a Men’s Shed.

The centre’s Spare Chair Café, which provides a central social hub for the local community, was the venue for short readings from the centre’s recent publication Choices from the Heart: a collection of stories, which features seven short stories about people living with mental health.

During his visit, Josh also took the opportunity to launch the centre’s new publication Spare change – A guide to free and low cost activities in and around Boroondara.

“Centres like the Kew Neighbourhood Learning Centre provide comfort and a sense of belonging to local residents, some of whom live alone. Often going to the centre and engaging with others provides a sense of respite, which is a great tonic for mental wellbeing,” he said.

“The staff and volunteers at Kew Neighbourhood Learning should be congratulated for their commitment to promoting mental wellbeing through the environment and activities they provide for local residents. The environment that is created by its spirit of inclusion and participation is valued by many”, Josh said.

Josh’s visit to Kew Neighbourhood Learning Centre coincides with World Mental Health Day on Monday 10 October and Mental Health Week which runs from Sunday 9 October to Saturday 15 October.
