I am delighted that our community campaign to secure a post office in Balwyn has been successful.
Australia Post has agreed to establish a Licensed Post Office on the Whitehorse Road shopping strip.
The Post Office will provide the full range of banking, bill payment and postal services for the residents and businesses of Balwyn. This model with its extensive range of products and services is used in over two‐thirds of Australia Post’s national network of postal outlets.
Over the next week Australia Post will be advertising in local newspapers calling for tenders to operate the Post Office in Balwyn. The successful tender will either operate as a stand alone business or be co‐located within an existing business in Whitehorse Road, Balwyn. Australia Post advises that they anticipate a fully functioning Post Office to be operational by early December, in time for the busy Christmas period.
Since the closure of the previous Balwyn Post Office in February this year, it has been a particularly difficult period for residents and traders wishing to use Australia Post’s services. Much inconvenience was caused. However, since that time I have been working on a daily basis with the Balwyn Traders Association, the Member for Box Hill, the Hon Robert Clark, Boroondara Council’s mayor, Cr Nicholas Tragas, and Cr Dick Menting on securing a new Post Office.
I am extremely grateful for the strong support given by the local community, including the more than 5000 people who signed the petition I lodged in the Australian Parliament on this important issue.
While I appreciate that the Post Office was initially closed in February due to the expiration of Australia Post’s lease and there was no offer from the landlord to renew, Whitehorse Road Balwyn is too vibrant a shopping strip to be denied adequate and accessible postal services.
This recent decision to establish a Licensed Post Office in Balwyn is both welcomed and needed.
I look forward to working with Australia Post in the months ahead to see the Post Office reestablished on time to the benefit of all local residents and businesses.
