Josh Frydenberg was delighted to attend this year’s National Tree Day celebrations at Kew East Primary School on Friday 5 August 2011.

Josh was taken on a tour of the ‘Habitat Haven’ where he joined students from the Year 5 Leadership Gardening Group and the Year 5 Environmental Leaders of the Future who were planting indigenous flora. Josh planted a Banksia Marginata (Silver Banksia) and hopes to see it grow over coming years.

"National Tree Day is an important opportunity to remind ourselves of the responsibilities we have to care for our environment. At Kew East Primary there are teams of young environmental ambassadors ready to take up this task.” Josh Frydenberg said.

Kew East Primary School’s ‘Habitat Haven’ was established in 2009 with a community grant from the Bendigo Bank to improve a neglected corner of the school ground.

Initially a working bee involving the school’s 'Green Team' made up of parents, teachers and students, helped clear the site and now in its third year, the project has been a great success promoting the planting of numerous native plants which have attracted much local wildlife.  Selection of plants for the Habitat Haven was determined by the 2009 Year 5 leadership team, after completing online research of indigenous plants for the Kew East area.

“The principal of Kew East Primary School, Helen Fotheringham, and her fellow teachers, particularly Eric McCann who manages the Habitat Haven project, deserve much credit for this wonderful environmental initiative.  The students boundless enthusiasm for their Habitat Haven was infectious and we all now have a personal interest in seeing this project go from strength to strength.” Josh Frydenberg said.

Josh very much enjoyed the visit to Kew East Primary School and said that he was proud that schools in his electorate were educating students about the importance of protecting our precious environment.
