A re-elected Turnbull Government will provide $300,000 to Servants Community Housing to help establish a new, high quality housing facility for ten or more women in our community.
Servants is an experienced community housing provider, having cared for some of the Kooyong community’s most vulnerable members for 30 years, across three facilities. Through this new facility, women in need will be provided affordable, private and secure accommodation, and support including meals and amenities.
Importantly, the facility will be available to women who are subject to domestic violence. The Coalition could not be clearer – domestic violence is a scourge in our community and we are focused on not only stamping it out, but also providing support to women who face such dangers.
The Coalition has invested more funding to respond to domestic violence than ever before. In the 2016 Budget, we provided $100 million in new funding for domestic violence measures. This is in addition to our $100 million Women’s Safety Package, announced in September 2015. The package funds specialist domestic violence units giving women access to legal advice and counselling, support for new technologies including safe phones and monitoring systems, and is in addition to a $30 million national information campaign targeted at countering violence and calling out disrespect.
I have been honoured to support Servants in the invaluable work they do in our community for many years. In 2012, I established the Kooyong Christmas Giving Tree, which has collected thousands of dollars in money and in-kind donations to extend the festivity of the Christmas season to Servants’ residents.
The new facility will provide a safe and comfortable residence for women in need, and further the capacity of Servants to perform their invaluable services in the Kooyong community.
