Josh Frydenberg today joined with students of Chatham Primary School in Surrey Hills to celebrate World Environment Day which occurs this Sunday 5 June.

Josh was led by the school’s student environment ambassadors on a tour of Chatham Primary’s thriving sustainability projects including indigenous plantings of grasses, shrubs and trees local to the Boroondara region, their vegetable garden and chook shed.

Today at Chatham Primary School was also ‘Orange Day’ as students worked on a range of activities learning about the precious Orangutans and Orange bellied parrots.

“As we celebrate World Environment Day it was wonderful to see so many environmentally conscious students and the great work they and their teachers are undertaking to protect our habitat. Their enthusiasm for a more sustainable planet was infectious. I commend the school and all students for the efforts.”

Chatham Primary School is one of just 60 schools in Victoria to join a program known as “Resource Smart Schools” or “AuSSI” – designed to make the school and community more environmentally sustainable.

As part of program, the School has developed a number of projects to track energy and water usage and waste produced to establish its environmental footprint. Students are encouraged to have rubbish free lunch days and to recycle paper and compost food scraps for the vegetable garden. Classroom energy saving monitors encourage responsible energy use and water monitors collect water overflow from taps to water the garden.
