Events celebrating National Volunteer Week will take place around the country from 9 -15th May 2011.

Josh Frydenberg, the Federal Member for Kooyong, will be joining volunteers for the lunchtime shift at the Salvation Army’s Bowen Street Camberwell premises on Friday 6th May.

Later that day, Mr Frydenberg will host a gathering in his electorate office for volunteers from a number of organisations from the electorate to thank them for their outstanding contribution to the local community.

Mr Frydenberg said that it was important to acknowledge and thank the many people in our community who contribute as volunteers.

“Each week as I meet with local organisations throughout the electorate of Kooyong I see first hand the valuable work of volunteers within our community.  They are in many ways the backbone of the organisations they support and without these local heroes we would all be worse off,” Mr Frydenberg said.

Each year it is estimated that more than five million Australians volunteer and contribute more than 700 million hours of community service in areas such as health care, heritage and arts, environment conservation, emergency services, education, social justice and sports.

Some of the organisations whose representatives will join Mr Frydenberg in the special National Volunteer Week celebration on Friday 6 May 2011 include the Saint Vincent De Paul Society, the Salvation Army, Villa Maria, Alzheimer’s Victoria, Camcare and Beyond Blue.
