Annual Kooyong Business Women's Luncheon

On 7 April I hosted the annual Kooyong Women's Lunch with a wonderful group of ladies who strive to make a difference in our local community. This year our group comprised of community leaders, educators, scientists, business figures. At lunch we were joined by the inspiring Senator Linda Reynolds, Australia's first female Brigadier in the Army Reserve.

Address to Rotary Club of Camberwell

I was delighted to address the Rotary Club of Camberwell on 6 April at the Club's dinner meeting. In a wide ranging discussion I touched on issues including the economy, tax reform and trade, and in particular in my portfolio, how Australia will become the largest exporter of LPG by 2020. I also spoke about the fact that over the last twelve months 85,000 more women than men entered the workforce creating the highest female participation rate plus total employment has increased by 3.9% or 441,000 since September 2013.  My address concluded with a Q&A session with many of the Club's members participating with very interesting questions.  I am pictured here with Chairman for the night, Garry Goldsmith and Club President, Anne Murphy.

Vehicle Emissions Forum

On 4th April I chaired a stakeholder engagement session on approaches to alternative fuels and electric vehicles, as part of the Vehicle Emissions Forum led by Minister Paul Fletcher, Minister Greg Hunt and myself.  The sessions followed a forum held last December which helped inform the development of a discussion paper released earlier this year. It was useful to hear ideas from a range of key stakeholder groups on ways the Government can continue to deliver positive action on reducing vehicle emissions to benefit industry and consumers.

Pollie Pedal 2016

It was terrific to ride in the first leg of this year’s Pollie Pedal on 3rd April, leaving Parliament House and arriving in Yass. This year’s ride hopes to raise $300,000 for Carers Australia, the national peak body supporting Australia’s 2.8 million carers. It is always great to get involved in this initiative with my parliamentary colleagues, which has raised over $4.5 million for Australian not-for-profits over the last 19 years.

2016 Terralex Asia Pacific meeting

On 2nd April I addressed a range of Asia Pacific businesses about the opportunities for investing in the Australian economy. To help facilitate this investment the Government has negotiated free trade agreements with China, Japan, Korea and the 12 countries that form the Trans-Pacific Partnership. But we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. The Government is continuing to improve Australia’s international competitiveness through industrial relations reform, tax reform and our deregulation agenda.

Visit to Breast Cancer Network Australia

It was wonderful to visit Breast Cancer Network Australia in Camberwell last week and catch up with CEO Christine Nolan and some of her staff. I always look forward to learning about BCNA's work and how they are supporting Australians affected by breast cancer.

Visit to 4th Kew Scout Group

It was terrific to visit the 4th Kew Scout Group today and be presented with a Victorian state scarf by Jack Brian, 4th Kew's chief scout ambassador. Following the presentation I shared a left handed handshake with Jack.

Visit to Basscare

It was terrific to visit Basscare in Canterbury on 1 April and to meet with CEO David Cotter and the Meals on Wheels team.  Basscare provides a range of services for older people and people with disabilities in the local community. Through its dedicated team of Meals on Wheels volunteers, Basscare delivers more than 30,000 meals a year. It was a real pleasure to meet with the volunteers and to see how much enjoyment they receive from making a difference in the local community.

Meeting with Minister Arun Jaitley

On 1st April, I had a very productive meeting with Hon. Arun Jaitley, Indian Minister for Finance, discussing energy and resource cooperation between our countries.  We have $15 billion worth of annual two-way trade, we export some $5 billion worth of coal to India, and we have recently signed our first export contract of LNG to India from the Gorgon project.  Going forward, Australia will continue to be a vital partner in the meeting of India’s growing energy needs.

Visit to the Western Darling Downs

On 30th March I visited Maranoa with Local Member, Bruce Scott, to see Australia Pacific LNG APLNG’s upstream gas facilities in action. As well as touring the gas processing facility and water treatment plant, it was interesting to meet with local landholders on their property to see firsthand how agriculture can co-exist productively with gas development.
