Address to The Sydney Institute

On 22 March, I addressed The Sydney Institute on the opportunities and challenges in Australia’s resources and energy sectors. I emphasised the importance of Australia’s resources and energy sectors to our economy and noted that despite current global market volatility, we should be optimistic about the future, particularly given our capacity to innovate, and use technology to enhance productivity. I also emphasised the need to pursue reform to ensure Australia’s continued success, including through the increased use and accessibility of geoscience mapping and through greater labour market flexibility. 60th Anniversary of Mitsubishi Australia

On 21 March, I congratulated Mr Yorihiko Kojima, Chairman of the Board, Mitsubishi Corporation, together with Mr Mike Takada, CEO and Managing Director, Mitsubishi Australia and Mr Robert Tsubonuma, incoming CEO and Managing Director, Mitsubishi Australia, on Mitsubishi Australia’s 60th Anniversary.  Mitsubishi is a valued and long term partner of Australia in sectors including  energy, metals, infrastructure, machinery, chemicals and food.  We look forward to further investments by Mitsubishi, including in Northern Australia.

2016 Relay for Life

This weekend the Kooyong Colts once again participated in the Hawthorn (Boroondara) Relay For Life. The Hawthorn Relay has collected more than $1 million for Cancer Council Victoria in 11 years, and Australia-wide relays raise $24 million each year. Thank you to our generous donors and walkers. I'm proud the Kooyong Colts are this year's highest fundraiser, making our team the highest fundraisers now for the past four years.

Not even the threat of rain could dampen spirits at KEWfest16 during my visit this morning. It was great to see stalls selling everything from dog biscuits to gym memberships! The inaugural festival was staged in 1974 and has grown to be one of the largest festivals in the City of Boroondara. At the St Anne's Primary School stall the hot commodity were the delicious chocolate rolls for $3 a packet and at the Kew Rovers stand I tried to nail a few ten pointers with some nifty handballs - though the general consensus was that I should stick to tennis. It was also great to catch up with Tim Smith the Member for Kew and others visitors to the festival this morning.

Support the Kooyong Colts and the Cancer Council

I'm excited to support the Cancer Council of Victoria with our Kooyong Colts team again participating in the Hawthorn Relay for Life, on Saturday 19th March 2016.

With the generous support of our community, the Kooyong Colts has fundraised over $65,000 since 2011 – being the highest fundraising team three years in a row.

Federal Parliament Energy Storage Summit

On Wednesday 16th March I gave the opening address at the Federal Parliament Energy Storage Summit. This event, organised by Senator Dio Wang and Senator Linda Reynolds, provided an excellent opportunity for Members and Senators to learn about this exciting and innovative area of the energy sector. Energy storage will play a role in meeting three key priorities for the energy portfolio; energy security, the transition to a lower emissions electricity sector and greater consumer empowerment. Storage could help the many Australian households who have already installed solar PV to better manage their energy consumption as well as encourage more to do so. The Government is supporting the development of this technology by providing more than $75 million for 20 innovative energy storage projects through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

Kooyong students attend National Schools’ Constitutional Convention

I was delighted to welcome Camberwell Grammar School Year 11 students James and Addison to Parliament on 16 March. The Kooyong students were in Canberra as Victorian delegates to the National Schools’ Constitutional Convention. The Convention invites young Australians to understand and discuss Australia’s Constitution and system of government. Students qualify for the National Convention through participating in local school and state conventions. This year, delegates at the National Convention explored the topic of education in the Australian Federation.

Swearing in of Senator James Paterson

Great to join Senator James Paterson this afternoon following his Maiden Speech. We were joined by Victorian Young Liberal President, Jess Wilson, and many friends from Victoria to toast to James’ future success as a Senator.

Meeting with the Movement of the Enterprises of France

On 15 March I met with the Ambassador of France to Australia, HE Mr Christophe Lecourtier, and representatives from the Movement of the Enterprises of France (MEDEF) to discuss the potential for further French investment in our country. We also discussed the resilience of the resources and energy sectors and the Government’s vision for northern Australia. France is an important trading partner for Australia, with investment into Australia totalling $21.8 billion in 2014. MEDEF is the largest employer federation in France, and the delegation included representatives from major companies in the construction, rail and oil and gas industries.

Kooyong student wins Simpson Prize

On 15 March, I met with and congratulated Felix, a Camberwell High School Year 10 student, on winning the Simpson Prize for Victoria. The Simpson Prize is a national competition for Year 9 and 10 students, funded by the Australian Government, encouraging students to explore Australia’s experience of World War I through a written or audio-visual presentation. Felix’s winning entry was an essay on the landing at Gallipoli. The Prize was presented at a ceremony at Parliament House by the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Materiel, the Hon Dan Tehan MP.
