Local Sporting Champions Afternoon Tea

Congratulations to the exceptional group of Local Sporting Champions grant recipients who joined me for an afternoon tea today. These very talented sporting individuals are recognized for their individual efforts and the achievements of young people in the electorate of Kooyong, who have excelled in sport and represent their team at state, national and international sport championships. Today we had representatives from a wide variety of sports including orienteering, synchronised swimming, sailing, basketball, table tennis, baseball, triathlon and athletics. These grants provide financial assistance for young people aged 12 – 18 years, to assist with the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing. It is a great achievement for all the recipients today as they have been chosen to compete at a high level and I commend each recipient of this award for their dedication and commitment in their chosen field. More information about the Local Sporting Champions grant program can be found here.

Grand Opening - Chatham Food Store

I was pleased to cut the ribbon and officially open the Chatham Food Store in Surrey Hills today, 2 September 2016. The locally run family business owned by Nick and Eve Tragas, identified the need for a local delicatessen in the area and wanted to make freshly made food available to the public. The owners focus on sourcing their food locally and consider themselves a unique service as they produce all their foods on the premises. At the opening I enjoyed tasting a variety of their cheeses, meats, dry goods, cakes and more!

Launch of the Dow Sustainability Program Report

On 1 September 2016, I was pleased to receive the United States Studies Centre's Dow Sustainability Program report. My good friend and illustrious predecessor as Environment Minister, the Hon Robert Hill AC, led the program over six years. Bringing together Australians and Americans from academia, government, think tanks and business, the report shows the strength and breadth of our relations. I commend those involved and look forward to exploring cooperation on energy and the environment between the our two great nations. I am pictured below with my colleague Senator Ian Macdonald, and the Hon Robert Hill AC.

Meeting with Kiwirrkurra and Birriliburu Indigenous Rangers

On Wednesday 31 August, I was delighted to meet with Nolia Napargarti-Ward and Rita Cutter who are arguably our most famous indigenous rangers. Both Nolia and Rita are strong supporters of the Government's Threatened Species Strategy, playing a critical role in practical threatened species conservation, patch-work burning, removing feral cats using traditional tracking skills, and working cross-culturally with scientists and conservationists. The work of indigenous rangers like Nola and Rita is absolutely vital to the future of our threatened species, especially given 80 per cent of these animals, like the iconic greater bilby live on land owned or managed by indigenous people. I am pictured below with Nolia, Rita, and our Threatened Species Commissioner Gregory Andrews.

Kew Primary School visits Parliament House

On Wednesday 31 August, 50 students from Kew Primary School in my electorate of Kooyong were lucky enough to see the first Question Time of the 45th Parliament during their visit to Parliament House. It was a truly historic day for my young constituents to visit the House. I do hope that we inspired a few future Parliamentarians! I am pictured here with the Kew Primary students.

Meeting with the New Zealand Minister for Climate Change

On Wednesday 31 August, I met with the Hon Paula Bennett MP, the New Zealand Minister for Climate Change, to discuss our trans-Tasman cooperation on climate and environment issues. I was pleased to inform Minister Bennett that the Turnbull Government had just tabled the Paris Agreement on climate change and the Doha Amendment to the Kyoto Protocol. New Zealand and Australia have strong cooperation in international efforts to reduce emissions. I am pictured here with Minister Bennett.

Accepting petition on the Great Barrier Reef from Greenpeace

On Wednesday 31 August, I had a constructive meeting with Greenpeace on the collective challenge we face in protecting our Great Barrier Reef. The Turnbull Government is working to reduce pressures on the Reef through the Reef 2050 Plan. The Federal Government, together with the Queensland state government will invest more than $2 billion over the coming decade to ensuring the health of the Reef.  I am pictured below accepting a petition from Greenpeace representatives.

Meeting with the National Landcare Advisory Committee

On Tuesday 30 August, the Hon. Luke Hartsuyker MP, Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister and I met with the National Landcare Advisory Committee at Parliament House. The Committee plays an important role in supporting communities to take practical action to protect and manage Australia's environmental assets and productive landscapes. Landcare is an important way for the Government to connect with local communities across the country. Delivery of on-ground works for the National Landcare Program has involved the participation of half a million volunteers in project activities, and over 2,000 indigenous people have been employed through projects, with 143 projects utilising indigenous ecological knowledge to guide investment. I am pictured here with my colleague, Assistant Minister Hartsuyker, and committee members.

Kew Rovers Vs Kew Comets Junior Football Clubs Grand Final

It was a terrific afternoon watching the Kew Rovers and Kew Comets Junior Football Clubs Grand Final at Schramms Reserve yesterday 28 August. It was a contest between two high-quality teams and a great display of athletic talent and determination from all the young players. The final outcome of the day was Kew Comets 5.9 – 39 to Kew Rovers 9.12 – 66. With the Kew Rovers taking home a 27- point win- a great result for the team! Both clubs have had an equally successful year, and should be very proud of their sensational efforts yesterday. Well done to both the Kew Rovers and Kew Comets and presidents Anthony Kift (Kew Rovers) and Sebastian Reid (Kew Comets) on a great season of junior football.

Camberwell Market 40 Year Anniversary Celebrations

On 28 August 2016, I was thrilled to be a part of the Camberwell Sunday Market 40 year anniversary celebrations. The market is a Melbourne icon in the electorate of Kooyong where more than 250,000 visitors each year scour for second hand, vintage and antique items. Over $15 million has been raised since the Balwyn Rotary Club started operating the market in 1976. All the funds go to a wide range of charities including international humanitarian projects, medical research and equipment grants, youth development grants, local community service projects and Boroondara community strengthening grants. The market is a great asset to the community and we thank all the hard working volunteers for their tireless efforts over the past 40 years. If you get a chance head down to the Camberwell market on a Sunday and discover a treasure, discover a cause, and discover Camberwell.
You can see my video at the market here
