Afghanistan Visit

In late April, Josh joined his parliamentary colleagues Senator Helen Kroger, Nola Marino, the Member for Forrest, and The Hon Dr Mike Kelly MP, the Member for Eden-Monaro, in a delegation visiting Afghanistan. The trip provided a wonderful opportunity to meet with Australian military personnel serving in both Kandahar and Oruzgan Province. The ADF are doing a brilliant job in challenging circumstances and in the process making a real difference on the ground. Josh is pictured with his parliamentary colleagues and members of the ADF.

On Monday 25 April, Josh represented the Federal Opposition at the ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. Joining the Governor of Victoria, The Hon. Alex Chernov, the Premier The Hon. Ted Bailleu and the State President of the RSL Major General David McLachlan and the rest of the Official Party, Josh took part in the March and commemorative service which took place on the Shrine Dais at the conclusion of the March. It was a special day and it was wonderful to see so many Melbournians participate in the March as well as the thousands who also came to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of those who have fought to defence our great country and its values and its cause.

My First Speech Competition

High school students in years 10, 11 and 12 are being invited to take part in a new national competition called “My First Speech”. Organised by the House of Representatives, students need to write and video a 3 minute speech as if it was their first speech to parliament. In this competition, students need to imagine they’ve been elected to the House of Representatives. They need to think about the issues which are important to them and then write and video a speech which expresses their concerns, hopes and ideals. It may be a personal, local, national or international issue or issues. Click here to read the media release.

Pollie Pedal ends at Manly

On April 10, Josh completed the nine day Pollie Pedal which began on the Gold Coast. Joining Tony Abbott for the 900 km plus ride was a wonderful opportunity to visit a number of regional communities including Kyogle, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Dorrigo, Armidale, Walcha and Cessnock and listen to the issues of interest to them.

An annual event for the last thirteen years, this charity bike ride raises money to support the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health. The money raised will fund clinical outreach positions for healthcare professionals to work in rural and remote aboriginal communities in western NSW and the Northern Territory.

The Pollie Pedal bike ride has raised more than one million dollars since Tony Abbott launched the charity fundraiser in 1997. It is hoped that this year’s event will raise in excess of $200,000.

Josh is pictured here with club members Barry Lawry, John Phillips, Scott Kerr, Richard Carter and Ken Dawborn.
